Shake and Surprise Cookies

When most people think of the holidays they think of all the fun baked goods that go along with them. But as an allergy family this can be the most nerve wracking time of year. So let’s make it a bit easier and create some fun, safe, and delicious cookies that everyone can eat!

Many times the allergy kids or family miss out but not this time. These super simple shaker or surprise cookies are sugar cookies that have a surprise layer of sprinkles that make great noise when gently shaken.

First make the sugar cookies.

Roll the dough out and pick your favorite cookie cutters. Remember each surprise cookie consists of three cookies.

Transfer the three cookies to a parchment paper lined cookie sheet.

Use a smaller cookie cutter to create a “window” in one of the cookies for each set.

Bake and cool completely.

Make your icing of 1 cup Powdered Sugar, 1/2 cup of water or bit more, and 1/2 tsp Guar Gum and food coloring.

Now it’s time to build the cookies. Take one cookie and draw a line of icing around the edge.

Place the “window” cookie upside down onto the iced cookie and press gently.

Next pour about a teaspoon of safe sprinkles or colored sugar into the cookie.

Draw a line of icing on the “window” cookie and place the last cookie layer right side up on top. Gently push the edges down to ensure all layers are firmly together.

Let the layers dry completely before you decorate the top layer.

Repeat until all the cookies have been built and decorated.

You can keep in a container for up to one week on the counter or two weeks in the refrigerator.
